Tips for Maintaining Beautiful Long Hair

Looking to keep long hair healthy and beautiful?

Even though long hair looks fresh and beautiful on any girl, there are many pitfalls when managing your rapunzel locks. When I was 15 years old, my hair was short (not exactly short, I would say medium length). I really wanted to keep long hair for my 15th birthday party, so I purchased my very first hair extensions. After I tried them on, there was this feeling of complete satisfaction I still have whenever I see my super long hair. That day I realized that I couldn’t live with short or medium size hair anymore.

Three years later, my hair was finally where I wanted it to be. It was almost as long as my belly button but it wasn’t on its best condition. When I was in college, I used to dye, straight and curl my hair all the time and the mix = heat + coloring is one of the biggest enemies your hair can have. When I turned twenty, I realized I needed to stop damaging my hair. I started taking measures to keep it long and healthy. Opportunely, thanks to my own experiences, studies and reviews, now I have tips and a proven routine that maintains my hair long and soft.

ΒΏQuieres mantener tu cabello largo saludable y bello?

1) Trimming

Cutting your hair doesn’t mean that you are going to get rid of your lovely locks once and for all. I usually cut my hair three times a year to make sure that the damaged tips are gone! Cutting your hair also stimulates growth. Don’t think about cutting, think about rebuilding your hair the next time you get a trim.

2) Shampoo and conditioner

You might call me crazy and you probably wash your hair every day but I don’t. Even though shampoos and conditioners are created to clean your scalp and keep your hair moisturized; they also have many chemicals that can potentially harm your hair if you use them too often. For that reason, I decided to rinse my hair twice a week.

I used to wash my hair 4 or 5 times a week before starting with my official hair care routine. Making a comparison between now and then, I can tell you that now is working great for me. Have you heard of less is more? Well, I guess that phrase applies a lot in this case. To be honest, I never keep the same shampoo, I used KΓ©rastase DensifiqueΒ Shampoo for a long time, but since I recently dyed my hair, I bought a shampoo specifically for treated hair (KΓ©rastase Reflection Chroma Captive)

(KΓ©rastase Reflection Chroma Captive)

3) Hair masks

Hair masks shouldn’t be used too often if your hair is in great conditions. In my case, every time I dye my hair, it tends to look/feel dry and unhealthy. My after-dyeing routine consists of applying my hair mask (KΓ©rastase Reflection Chroma RicheΒ Mask) after my conditioner, massage my scalp and rest of the hair for 5 minutes, wait another 10 minutes and then rinse with warm water. I do this twice a week for at least two months (what it usually takes my hair to recover its damage). After those months, I only wear the hair mask once a month to keep my hair moisturized and soft. Again, hair masks have a formula that contains a lot of chemicals and cannot be used regularly; so once a month should be fine.

4) Try out alternative hairstyles

Whether it is for school or work, we want to give a great impression, and keeping our hair gorgeous is part of that idea. Blowers and heat tools are amazing ways to make our hair look decent, but they can also become a bad influence if you use them too often.

Here is what I do. Whenever I have important events such as weddings, baptisms, birthday parties or any type of special occasion I use those heating tools. But for everything else I try some hairstyles that don’t involve any type of heat. I guess my favorite is the hair bun because it’s the easiest one, but I also wear a lot of ponytails. Since braids are very trendy lately, I’ve trying out some hairstyles involving braids.Β  Choose the ones that better suit you and try to blend them with your daily routine. You will see a less damaged hair if you avoid the curler or blower and start trying out some alternative hairstyles.

5) Don’t dye your hair too often

Here is one fact you probably didn’t know about me: I dye my hair once a year. Yes! You probably don’t believe it but it’s true, you can ask my hair stylist and he’ll be happy to confirm what I’m saying. I decided to do this because color will always make your hair vulnerable to damage. I do dye my roots once a month, but the rest of my hair remains untouched for the rest of the year. In order to keep my color, I use the shampoo I mentioned you before for colored and treated hair.
